I love this photograph. It is really powerful. Reminds me of a bluegrass song we sing which is based on how easily it is "drift too far from the shore":

"Out on the Perilous Deep
Where dangers silently creep
And storms so violently sweep
You're driftin' too far from the shore..."

Your photograph shows so well the anchoring of the cross. And attached to that, the Lord's mercy with a rope and buoyancy aid, for the times when we start sinking like Peter - or the times when we are led astray by distractions - or the times we wander just a bit away from the narrow path. It's only perhaps a wandering by one degree which doesn't seem much at the time - but distance increases the further along the tangent we go.

I know from playing at the beach at a child how easily you can get caught up in the sunny weather and the fun of jumping over waves, time passes and you don't even notice that you have drifted way down the shore. It's so easy to do without noticing until much later.

I'm so glad the cross does not stand alone as a strong austere icon in this picture. It's so comforting that tied to the cross is provision for rescue, in case we drift a bit too far from the shore.

Thank you Jonny.
