I love this icon. I discovered it recently on a silent retreat.

I find the difference in facial expressions between the shepherd and sheep startling.

The sheep looks startled and scared whilst the shepherd has an assured look on his face. Its as if he is saying - "I have been here before", "You are safe with me".

Look how the sheep appears almost straining to get away but the shepherd restrains and holds the sheep back.

Reflecting and praying with this icon helped me renew my faith in and dependance on our good and faithful shepherd.

I like the picture as well, though for different reasons. What I find most striking is that in this particular rendering of Jesus he's not white. How refreshing! There are no blue eyes, trimed beard or long flowing hair that characterizes so many portraits of the Good Shephard here in Great White North America.

Just a thought,
